Braum's planning to build in Granbury (Posted Wed 09:14 am)
All those rumors about Braum's coming to Granbury ... are true. Granbury mayor David Southern said the ice cream chain has applied for a building permit and will appear before the Zoning Board of Adjustment in September, asking for variances on the roof line and landscaping. If everything passes muster, the new Braum's will be located on Highway 377 by Southwest Securities, near Walgreen's.

Vendors and cycles will surround the courthouse over the weekend. Speakers for the rally include Jerry Savelle, Kenneth Copeland and Jesse Duplantis.

First Sonic, now Golden Chick. By the first of the year, Acton and nearby residents should have a Golden Chick restaurant near David's Super Market on Highway 4. High school football previews (Posted Tue 09:06 am)
Richland Rebels at Granbury Pirates
7:30 p.m. Friday
Last season:
Richland 5-5, Granbury 1-9.
Returning starters: Richland 3 offense/2 defense; Granbury 5 offense/5 defense.
Notables: Richland won both the state and national 7-on-7 passing championships this summer...The Pirates will debut a new starting quarterback, but who that will be remains to be seen. Cody Sillivent, Ross Whittet and Blake Balderaz have all impressed coaches in the preseason and the job remained wide open at press time. Balderaz is something of a question mark, however, after suffering an ankle injury in last Friday's scrimmage against Paschal...The Rebels are expected to play last season's starting quarterback Phil Gonzalez at wide receiver more this season because of his 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash. That means Tyler Cotton, who was 25-for-36 for 252 yards as a backup last season, will spend much more time under center. The move paid off in 7-on-7...Granbury's pass defense has been solid in two scrimmages, but it will get a severe early season test. Pirate coach Scotty Pugh, whose team will also be throwing the ball on most plays this season, said he would not be surprised to see between 80-100 passes thrown Friday night...Each team does, however, have a running game. Granbury has averaged 5 yards a carry in the preseason, usually mainly Zach Mathis and Oscar Garcia in the backfield (Whittet and Sillivent have also been prolific runners). Richland returns running back Steven Collins, who rushed for 938 yards and five TD last season.

Rio Vista Eagles  at Tolar Rattlers
7:30 p.m. Friday
Last season:
Rio Vista 4-6; Tolar 6-5, lost in bidistrict.
Returning starters: Rio Vista 6 offense/9 defense; Tolar 5 offense/5 defense.
Notables: Rio Vista's strength is its defense, but the Eagles return plenty of punch on the offensive line as well, including 215-pounder Nathan Clinkscales and 205-pounder Jeffrey Beard. Young Tolar was pushed around a little in preseason scrimmages by bigger players...This is one of two Class 2A teams on the Tolar predistrict schedule. They also host Hico on Sept. 12...All of Rio Vista's victories last season came in predistrict as the Eagles went 0-5 in league play. Tolar, on the other hand, recovered from a slow start to the season to make its eighth playoff appearance in 10 seasons...Tolar is still settling on a new starting quarterback, but the Rattlers are set at running back. Austin Hattox (437 yards, 6 TD) and Randal Stewart (281 yards, 3 TD) lead the way.

Aquilla Cougars at Happy Hill Pioneers
7:30 p.m. Friday
Last season:
Aquilla 2-8; Happy Hill 6-4, lost in bidistrict.
Returning starters: Aquilla 5 offense/3 defense, Happy Hill 1 offense/0 defense.
Notables: After one of their toughest seasons in the program's history, the Cougars are ready to bounce back. They certainly have the experience, especially on offense, but they will have to make sure the team's infighting of last season does not surface again. Last season it got so obvious that it even reached the media...Happy Hill will be challenged to equal last season's success that resulted in a district championship and their first playoff appearance at the TAPPS Six-Man Division I level. Still, coach Jake Mills is confident that his young team will gel in time for district play, which doesn't begin until Oct. 17...Wide receiver Dylan Price is the Pioneers' lone returning player—and he was their quarterback last season.
